大失敗

今日は年賀状を投函し終えたので、晴れ晴れとした気持ちでいたら、すっごい大失敗をしたことに気がついて、今度は青くなってました・・・。

年賀状を年内に出せるのって、本当に久しぶりだったんです。なので何人かの人には写真も送りたくて封筒に入れて送ったんです・・・。封筒に「年賀」って書くの忘れたよ・・・（涙）

その方たち、年内に年賀状を受け取るというヒジョーに珍しい体験をされると思います。そして全員メルアド知らんので、知らせようもナシ！何？この完璧な大失敗さはー！

うわーーーーーん、穴があったら入りたい。

今年はイギリスに送ったクリスマスカードもクリスマスに間に合わんかったし〜。

こんな１年の締めくくりってあり？！

メリークリスマス！

みなさん、楽しいクリスマスを過ごされましたか〜？

私はというと、今年はガチョウのローストもロースとポテトもヨークシャープディングもクリスマスプディングもクランベリーソースもシャンペンもなかったですが、家族とたぶん６年ぶりくらいにクリスマスを過ごせて幸せでした。

すっかりイギリス式のクリスマスが普通になってしまっているとはいえ、やっぱり日本の宝、ケーキは食べました。こんなふわふわなスポンジってあまりないと思う。おいしかった〜。でもきっと日本での生活が長くなるにつれ、クリスマスに対しての考え方も徐々に変わっていくはず。柔軟性バンザイ。

でもまだ今年はイギリスの余韻が強いので、今日も１人でクリスマスモードでした。２６日もBoxing dayといって、りっぱなクリスマスの１日なんですよね〜。

Did you have a lovely christmas? I hope so!

I didn't get to have either roast or champaign this year, but it was nice to be with my family. We don't celebrate Christmas traditionally, and it's just a commercial event though, I still love the idea of spending it with family. I had yummy Christmas cake and some special food.

New year's celebration's coming in less than a week now. This is one of the biggest events here. Though I was here last year on new years day, I'm still excited! It'll be nice to see relatives too!

走る

ここ数日、毎朝走ってます。

もう明日にもやめてしまう可能性は超巨大なのですが、それでも走るとスカッとして、酸素が脳にドバッて入った感じで爽快です。しかも１５分で済む。これはありがたい。

ヨガまがいのことは何となくやっていたのですが、これだとどうしても３０分はやらないと運動した気にならないし、歩くことにかけては１時間は歩かないと何か物足りない。それが１５分で満足しちゃうんだから、グッドグッド。

でも足がちょっと痛い（笑）

明日も走れるかしら。それともまた来週ってなっちゃうのかなあ。

ま、朝起きてから決めよう。

I've started running in the morning since a few days back.

It's great to have a run for 15 min. I feel so much better after that. My head seems to work better in this way too. I've been doing yoga-like exercise when I get some spare time though I need at least half an hour for this. If it's shorter than that, I don't feel I did enough. So running saves so much time. How great is that?

Well I have to say I have absolutely no confidence at all that I can continue this for a long time. :-) I might even stop this habit (not a habit yet though!) tomorrow. I'll decide whether I'll run again tomorrow morning. haha!

大掃除

この前の日曜日は、窓を洗ったりして部屋の大掃除をしました。

おとといは、たまった郵便物や書類、ラフの数々を整理しました。

１年でなんでこんなにたまるんだ！？ってくらい何だか分からんけど色々あった。ものすごく貧乏性で「捨てられない病」な私ですが、思い切って捨ててしまった。どうか、捨ててしまった物を後悔しませんように・・・！

引き出しを整理していたら、ラフの段階まですすめてボツった作品の数々もひょっこり顔を出しました。ボツった時は、「なんでー？」って思ったけど、今見ると「うん、詰めが甘すぎ！」と素直に見れたりします。またもう一度手を加えれば十分いい物になりそうなのが多かったので、また数年後にでも着手できれば。

そういえば「ぐうたらサンタとはたらきもののひつじ」も、元は私が１９の時に書いたもので、その時はどうしてもエンディングが考えられなくて、未完のまま数年放っておいたのです。そして大学２年の時にひっぱり出してきたら、すらすらエンディングもかけてしまったっていう。。。もの事はタイミングなんですかねー。

ときどき大掃除をして、後ろを振り返るのもいいもんですね。

Traditionally we clean the house throughly before the end of the year.

I tried to organise all the documents and mail piled up in a year. I hate throwing things, so my room tends to get a little messy... I chucked out quite a lot this time.

Among those documents, I dug out old plots and mock up books I'd done long before, but didn't get published eventually. They can't be published as they are now, but they are potential. I would like to work on them again and get them published!

Actually I wrote my Christmas book "Lazy Santa and Toto" when I was 19. Then I just couldn't get ideas for the ending. I left it unfinished for a few years, and somehow I worked on it again when I was in Uni. Then I managed to finish writing up the story in a day. I guess stories are like wine. They need to be matured! :-)

ボブディラン

ボブ・ディランがZEPP（ライブハウス）ツアーというニュース。　行きた〜い！

名古屋は３月１８日＆１９日。
チケット高いけど、全然構わん。一生に一度。ディランも６８歳。そんな何回も日本にはこれないだろう。でもチケットぴあの先行抽選発売は、ぴあカードとかいう年会費が４０００円もするのを持ってないといけないんだとか・・・ひどい〜。がんばって一般発売で取りたいけど、開始３分で売り切れかしら。トホホ。

アルバムは「Highway 61」と「The Essential Bob Dylan」というベスト盤しかもってないけど、Highway 61は延々とかけていた時期があったし、コレ聞きながら深夜３時まで制作活動していた大学時代。思い入れがありすぎる。砂みたいな声（By David Bowie）がすごい好きなんですよね。若い頃かっこいいしな〜！むう。

チケット何とか取れないかしら。

The ticket's 12000yen. It's a lot more than I usually pay for any concert tickets though, who cares? That Dylan's coming! Well, I don't fancy his work lately, but "HIGHWAY 61" has been my favourite of all favourites. I used to work on projects listening to this CD when I was in uni.

I'm sure it's going to be difficult to get hold of the ticket though, I'll try! and want to see Mr. Dylan before my eyes!!!!!

ネンガジョー/new year cards

「よし！今日、半日で年賀状を終わらせるぞ！」

と、重い腰をあげてとりかかりました。テレビをつけながらやっていたのですが、小栗くんの年賀状CMが流れるたびに（小栗くんが「年賀状って大変だよな」というと、友達が「だからもらうとうれしいんじゃん」的なことを言うCM）小栗くんの気持ち分かるなー。でも私も手書きのコメントついたやつもらうと大切にしちゃうな〜。なので、がんばって書くぞー！などと思いながら、やっていました。

以外にはじめると楽しくて、なかなかいい息抜きになった気がします。

ロンドン時代は、年賀状をもらっても返事が書けなかったので、こうして元旦に間に合うように年賀状を書くって新鮮でした。なんか自分の中に日本人を感じる！（笑）

I've sent off christmas cards last week to the people in the UK. (I don't think they can get there on time though!) Now, I have to make new year cards for people in Japan. I guess because I'm too used to the convenience technology offers, I find it a little too much to write comments on new years card.

But I myself love getting cards with hand writing, so I spent a half day printing out and adding greetings on the cards. It was actually nice to think what to write to people I haven't met for ages. It means I thought of them, I cared for them. This is a nice thing, isn't it?

昨日「カールじいさんと空とぶ家」を観てきました〜。
まだ見てない人もたくさんいらっしゃるでしょうから、内容は書きませーん。のでご安心を。

これって3Dもあるんですね。私は吹き替え嫌いで、絶対字幕で観たいと思ったのですが、割引料金で入れる映画館は吹き替えしかなかった・・・。友達といっしょだったので、かなり妥協して入館。

私は大学でアニメーションもやっていたので、ピクサーにはかなり興味津々。よく大学時代の友達とピクサー映画が上映されるたびにいそいそと観に行ってました。アニメーション談話にも花が咲いた時代！ちょっぴり恋しい。

来月は「かいぶつたちのいるところ」スタートですね。これは絶対字幕で観る！

I went to watch "UP" yesterday with my friend. (Don't worry I won't leak anything about the story!)

I used to make animations in uni, so I've checked out every pixer films since. My favourite is definitely "Toy Stories"! I thought the story line was perfect. I used to watch it during lunch almost every day when I was in uni. Mmm...I love to write that kind of story someday.

しめっ！

なが〜いおつきあいのイギリスの絵本の〆切がいつになるんかな〜と、ぼんやり思っていたら、イキナリ２３日までと来た！

ヨーロッパ時間でダラダラやる感じだったので、もっと気合い入れたいのにー！と思っていたら、平気で〆切を２週間後とかに設定しちゃうんだもんな。イギリス的な仕事の仕方は健在だわ。まだ向こうの意向を聞かないと取りかかれないページが何枚かあるんですが、デザイナーは今日までホリデーです。

と言いつつ、「まだ１０日あるし、気長に待とう」とか思ってしまう辺り自分もあんま変わんないな、とか思ってみたり（笑）

ま、何とかなるやろう、うん。

古着

気づいたら一週間以上ブログ書いてなかったですね。
時間たつの早っ！

最近ひさしぶりにヴィンテージのワンピースを買いました。物はポリエステルだし、洗濯できるだろうと手洗いをしてみたら「ギャーーー！」っと叫びたくなるほど水が真っ黄色に！

７０年代初頭の服だからな〜。ウン十年分の汚れだったのか・・・？
おそるべし古着。

ロンドンにいた時もパリに行った時は必ず寄る古着屋があって、よく直しては着ていたもんです。そのパリの店は結構直さないといけない状態のものも多かったのですが、ロンドンよりずっと安くて、しかも値切り下手の私でもかなり値切れる店員がいるお店でした。すごくいい加減なので、半額とかに余裕でしてくれた（笑

また行く機会があったら、行ってみよう。

It's been long since the last diary.
It's getting gradually cold here in Japan, but compare to how it was when I was little, the winter's so much warmer now. I guess people in colder countries are happy with this change, but I think this has been a dreadful change, to be honest.

Frog used to be an animal appears just in the summer though we hear they croak even now!
The number of sparrows has gone down by half, and I don't see snails anymore.

I'm still surprised how rapidly the environment has changed while I was away from home.
I was taking a walk yesterday by vinyl houses where strawberries were grown. To raise strawberries in the winter, they put the heating on all day and night.

these days I find too many clues saying our environment is on the verge of collapse. People in Japan are too used to the wealth they live in. I don' know what I can do, but I try to reduce any waste comes from my everyday life.

行方不明の人発見

私は県内に一つしかない加納校美術科、という週の授業の半分以上は美術で、ヤンキーさながら皆つなぎを来て校内をブラブラし、デッサンはスズメと共にやるという学校に行っていたのですが、なんだか最近その時代の人たちに再会しています。（注・木炭デッサンは消しゴム代わりにパンで消すので、スズメが教室に入ってきてデッサンしてる横をチュンチュンやってるわけです。）

今日は岐阜市の絵本専門店おおきな木で、高校の元クラスメイトで絵本作家の高畠那生（たかばたけ なお）画伯のトークショーがあるというので、行ってきました。

那生くんとは、この前東京で７年ぶりくらいに会ったのですが、今日はさらに７年会ってないもう１人の同級生くんがいてびっくりしました。元気そうでした。二人とも所帯持ちで、カンドーしました。

でも、もっとびっくりなことに、おおきな木に行く途中、１０年以上、もうどこで何をしていらっしゃるのか全く不明だった高校時代の彫刻の先生を見かけました。私は車内だったので、声はかけられなかったのですが、威厳のある風貌そのまま、さらに芸術家風をまきちらす存在感があって、「変わってないな」と思いました。

再会ラッシュ。

My friend's exhibition

ニューヨークで活動している写真家で、友人であるベルギー出身のClemenceの作品が、パリの国立図書館で展示されます。一番左のターバン巻いてる女の人が彼女の作品の一部。圧巻のテーマを追っています。テーマを説明するとながくなっちゃうので、省きますが。

展示会なんていつの間に、と思っていたのですが、言われてみればば、「すごい人数の中から選ばれてイタリアでワークショップやってきた、とか何とか」ってことを前に言っていた気がします。何回聞いても人のことが覚えられない私は、はっきりとこの展覧会が何なのか言えないのですが、とにかくすごいことだってことくらいは分かりますよ！

もし１２月１５日から２月２１日の間にパリに寄っちゃう、などということがあればぜひ足を運んでみてくださいね〜。新進気鋭、きっと写真史に名をのこす！と私は１人で豪語してるんですが、そのくらい才能のある人です、この人は。

人生で出会えてよかったと思う人間のひとり。

A NY based photographer, and also one of my great friends, Clemence is exhibiting her work at the National Library, Paris. Her work is the first on the left.

She was already showing her talent when we were in uni. It's a shame she doesn't draw illustrations anymore, but I'm pleased that she found a field that truly suits her.

Apparently the exhibition is on from 15th Dec till 21st Feb next year.

If you happen to be in Paris during this period, why not giving a visit there?
She's a very very talented emerging photographer.
I wish I could fly there right now!

黄金の木

近くの公園のそばに真っ黄色になった、イチョウの木を発見！
空がスカーーーーーッと晴れてて、青とのコントラストがきれいでした。

The colour was beautiful against the blue sky.

We Japanese love seeing Autumn colour.
It's our tradition in this season.

クリスマス

日本で過ごすクリスマスはたぶん５年以上ぶり。

去年は、クリスマス一週間前に知り合いのつてでロンドンへの航空券をほぼ無料で頂いてしまい、クリスマス直前にロンドン入りでした。もちろんたらふくローストやらクリスマスケーキやら、シャンペンやらを詰め込んで帰ってきたわけです。

今年はロースト食べられないな〜。

やっぱり日本とイギリスのクリスマスの受け取り方の違いというのは、今でもおもしろい。私はもう「クリスマスは家族と過ごすイベント」というのが基本になってしまっているのですが、日本ではどっちかっていうと恋人同士の一大イベントなんですもんね〜。

でも在英１０年の間にイギリス人の考え方にもずいぶん変化が出てきて、イギリスでもかなりクリスマスの宗教性は薄れています。それでもクリスマス前後のテレビは、教会とかいっぱい出てくるけど。

しかしやっぱり年中クリスマスを中心にもの事が回っているような国に長居すると、１２月に入ったとたんクリスマスのことを考え出してしまうんですね。そんなくせが根付いているようです。もう細胞がそんな感じになっているみたいです。

なのですでにクリスマスにどんな料理を作ろうか、日本のオーブンで出来るクリスマス料理はないかと、色々思案して、うひひとなっている私なのでした。

I haven't spent Christmas in Japan for probably more than half a decade.

I was going to be here for Christmas last year, but I happened to get free tickets to London. It was lovely to spend Christmas with my friends over Roasted turkey and Champaign!! I really miss oven cooked food now.sob sob.

I see a huge difference in people's attitude towards Christmas here. It's much more commercial (though it is getting really commercial in England too.) and Christmas is an event for lovers in Japan. I prefer to spend it with my family. That's more natural to me after staying in London for 10 years. The change of home base can change your idea, really.

We don't have a big oven. I don't think I can make any roasts this year. But I quite like my parents to have a go at European Christmas, so I'll try to gather recipes online! I love to make roasted potatoes at least...!!

電車の中で

週に何度かローカル線に乗るんだけど、昨日はその電車がクリスマスデコされていた。

中には子供たちの描いた「私の夢」的なテーマの絵がたくさん。サッカー選手とかお菓子屋さんとか色々あったけど、その中に、

「ほんを　つくりたい」という絵が。

いいじゃないですか！作ってくださいよ！
いつか一緒に仕事しよう。

言葉が簡潔で気持ちよかった。

The local train I take a few times a week is a lifeline for people who live in this rural area.
It was decorated with Christmas lights yesterday .
And inside there were lots of children's pictures about their dreams on the windows.

One boy wants to be a football player.
Other dreams were to become a baker, a teacher, a florist, etc.
Among those I found a picture with

"I want to make books."

Yes, girl. Please hold on to the dream and make it come true!
It will be really cool if this girl really becomes someone to make books.
I look forward to working together someday.

長屋暮らし

寝る前に、ふとんにくるまって本を読むのが至福の時。

最近は宮部みゆきさんの江戸時代劇にハマっていて、気分はもうすっかり「長屋暮らしの江戸っこ娘」。すごくその時代を調べた上で描いているんだろうけど、やっぱり現代人が描く江戸は「現代っぽい」んでしょうか。それでもやっぱりおもしろい。ここ２ヶ月くらい宮部みゆきしか読んでません。

その前はノンフィクションか、夏目漱石しか読んでなかったので、すごく新鮮です。２２歳くらいまで、ちゃんとした活字本を一冊読み通したことがなかったのですが、くせになると楽しい娯楽だということに気づきました。

私はニンテンドーDSを買ってしまうと、絶対にずーーーっとドラクエとかやって、勇者になりきったまま日常を過ごしてしまいかねないので、喉から手が出るほど欲しいけど、まだ手を出してません。その代わりに本読んでます。なんとなく、同じ時間を費やすなら本の方がいいのかな、とか思うのですが、それでもやっぱりいつか買ってしまうんだろうか、DS（笑）

でも、もうしばらくはがまんがまん！

あれ・・・、本の話をしようと思ったのに、結局DSがどうのっていう話になっちゃったよ。

I hadn't read an entire novel till I was 22.
I used to read picture books only through my teen. I thought those books with full of texts were too boring, and too time consuming and too tiring to follow.

But somehow I love reading books every night before going to bed now. This has been my precious time of the day. I could never imagine myself reading novels before though man can change. huh?

あやとりと折り紙

昨日は、３ヶ月ぶりに６歳と３歳のおいっこと遊びました。
毎回絵を描いたり、物を創ったりして遊んでいるんだけど、昨日はなぜか折り紙を始めたので、「そういえば折り紙の本があったよな〜」と思い、本棚へ。

あったあった。
子どもの頃の本。しかも親戚からもらった本なので、かなり年期が入っている。
そしてさらに小学生の時にやっていたあやとりの本も出てきた。

折り紙なんて久しぶりなので、もう鶴しか折れない３０代。
おいっこにハートの折り方を教えてもらいました。
だてに幼稚園に行っていない。ひまわりなんかも折れるようになっていてびっくり。

３ヶ月前は、私の話を「うんうん」と聞いて頂けなのに、今はしっかり揚げ足取ってるし、子どもの３ヶ月の成長って、すごいな〜。

あやとりも本を見ながらやってみると、おもしろいですね。
やっぱり昔の子どもの遊びは頭をつかって、いい感じ。

I saw my nephews yesterday after 3 months! One's 6 and the other's 3 yrs old now.
We usually draw or make some handicraft when we play. We made lots of origami this time.

Origami's got millions of fans all over the world now.
I've met quite a few people spoke to me about origami while I was in the UK. But I hadn't done that for ages.
I dug out a book about origami out of piles of old books. It was pretty fun to make origami again.

うれしいこと

最近のうれしいこと。
Good news of the week.

アルゼンチンの親子からファンメールが届いたこと。
３歳の女の子が、はしれワニくん・スペイン語版が大好きで、しかもねずみさんのハイヒールがお気に入りらしい。かわいい！I got an email from a mother and a little girl in Argentina! Apparently the girl likes the high heels Miss mouse wears in The Fantastic Mr.Wani. Isn't it sweet?

ロンドンの私のエージェントであり親友のマークが、「今度ロンドンに来た時は、毎日オーブン料理を作ってあげるよ」と約束してくれた。むう〜！たびたい！ローストビーフにダックにローストポテトにヨークシャープディングに、そしてそしてアップルクランブル、カスタードどば載せでお願いします。My agent Mr.M, who's also my great friend has promised me to cook yum yum oven food next time I go to London. I've been missing roasted stuff so badly, cos we don't have the tradition of oven cooking in Japan. (So we don't have big ovens like you can find in Europe) I have to request Roasted beef and duck, potatoes and Yorkshire pudding. And to finish up the course, I'd have to have apple crumble covered with custard. oops, I'm getting hungry!

Apparently more people are beginning to take a look at my books recently. How about getting a book for children for christmas? "Lazy Santa and Toto" will be perfect for that! (^o^)

まだまだピザ

ピザのかまども描くので、ネットで検索していたら、ぐうぜん春に友達と行ったピザ屋さんが出てきた。

チャリでブラブラいった東京・永福町のピザ屋さん。ものすごい人気で、平日（確か火曜日）なのに並んでた。ここのかまどが何とも熱そうで、でもその中に見えるピザがメチャクチャうまそうで、よだれ出そうになりました。

めっちゃくちゃおいしかったです！
たぶん水牛のモッツァレラを使ってるんじゃないかなぁ。
とか勝手に予想。

あれ？ピザの感想文になっちゃったよ。

いまだピザの研究チュー

いまだ究極のピザの表現を求めて研究チューです。
なんで「中」じゃなくて「チュー」なのかというと、ピザのイラストが必要なのは、ねずみが主人公の絵本だから！

この前、映画を見に行く前に友達とピザ屋さんに行って、しっかり写真をバシャバシャ撮ってきました。一番欲しかった写真は、ピザを一切れもちあげたときに、びよーんとのびる溶けたチーズ。やっぱりピザの写真を見て、「食べたい！」って思うのって、びよーんチーズじゃないですか？

でもなかなかうまく撮れなくて、何度も撮っていたのですが、そのうち冷めてあんまりのびなくなってしまいました。ピザが生き生きしているのは、かまどから出てきて５分まで？！

I'll need this for a book I'm working on now.

So, when I went to a pizzeria with my friend the other day, I took some photos of a pizza before we tucked in. I think it's the melted, stretched cheese which makes people think they have to have a pizza at once! I asked my friend to lift a piece and tried to shoot pictures of it. I guess we looked a bit suspicious in the restaurant! I couldn't get the picture of the melted cheese though, the pizza was yummy anyway. Yum!

This Is It

マイケル・ジャクソンの「This Is It」を観てきました。

やっぱマイケルすごすぎ。
プロフェッショナル！

「前々からファンだった！」とは言えないけど、子どもの頃みたマイケルのPVやライブ映像は圧巻。あんな動きができるなんてびっくりでした。

悲しいことに最近のマイケルのニュースといえば裁判関係だったり、借金関係でしたが、This is itのステージ上のマイケルは、ものすごく生き生きと輝いていて、「あ〜この人ほんとに音楽と踊りが好きなんだー」と実感してしまいました。

５０であの動きは並大抵の努力じゃ出来ないと思う。
ファンもそうでない人にもオススメです！

I went to see "Michael Jackson's This is it" today.

Michael is amazing...
I haven't been a big fan of him, but I remember his video clips I saw when I was small were just stunning.
In the film, he never compromised with what he wanted and how he wanted the stage to be.
mmm...professional!!!!!

It's really sad that he was often on news for being accused, or having tons of debt lately though. I really thought he loved music and dance from the bottom of his heart.

Simply it's not possible for a 50 year old guy to make such movements!
I recommend this film to anybody who wants inspiration for life.

そんな二人に本を送ったら、写真を送ってきてくれた！うれしいじゃないですか。写真のっけていいか確認とってないので、顔は隠しちゃいました。かわいいバニーちゃんで。They sent me their photos with my book! I'm so happy to see them together in NY.

二人とも数年に一回の割合で会ってるんだけど、３人そろう機会はあんまりない。たぶん６年くらい前にチェコで集まったきり？な気がします。大学時代は、何だか知らないけどいろいろやったな〜。ぷぷぷ。やはり学生時代の仲間はいいですね。またどっかで（たぶん今度はNYで）３人そろってお茶でもしたいな〜。

I see them once in a while once by one, but we haven't got together with all of us for ages.I think the last time three of us got together was when we went to Czech Republic 5 or 6 years ago.We used to see each others every day. We had such great fun too.
It's true friends I made in schools and Uni are special.

I'm looking forward to seeing them again in NY, probably next year!

農業祭 / Farmer's market

今日はアメリカ人の同僚とそのお友達とで遊びに行く予定だったんだけど、み〜んな風邪引いたらしい！やっぱり秋ですねー。

午後は天気もよかったし、目も回復したのでチャリンコでプラプラ。

近くのJAで農業祭やってました。
地方の野菜はおいしい。そしてめちゃくちゃ安い！

ロンドンの野菜は野菜じゃなかった。なんか違うものだった！
こ〜んなに大きなニンジンや、その他お野菜が並ぶ会場のバックグラウンドはなぜか書道展。

ぽわ〜んとしてて、いい感じじゃないですか〜。

I went for a little bike ride in the afternoon.

I came across a local farmer's market.

My town's in the country, so I can get really fresh veges with absolute low price.
I never liked veges in London, cos they were all imported, and by the time they got to the supermarkets, they were too old to contain nutritions. Well, things can be a little inconvenient here, but I'm very happy with the quality of food I can get.

Anyway, this market reminded me the importance of local consumption.

目がまっか / Bloodshot eyes

昨日から目が真っ赤でちょっとコワイ。
I've got bloodshot eyes since yesterday.

目が疲れているらしいんだけど、それほど目に悪いことをしたつもりもないのにな〜。やはり一ヶ月くらいしっかりした休みをとらなかったので、溜まった疲れが出てきたのかしら。I guess it's because I haven't had a proper day off for about a month. But this month, I haven't really worked on the computer that much though.

そういえばインドをブラブラしていた時、ケララ地方の漁師で、白目に赤インクをたらしたみたいに、真っ赤っかでかなり怖い目をした人がいた。It reminded me of a fisherman in Kerara district of India. Literally he looked as though he dropped some red ink into his eyes. He had the reddest eyes I'd ever seen! Anyway, I wouldn't want an eye like his.

私もああなる前に目を休めるとしよう・・・な〜んて思っていたら、今日は久しぶりに休みをとって、同僚とカラオケに行くんだった。う〜〜〜〜ん、ますます充血しちゃうかも！？I really should get some rest today....but I'm going to Karaoke with my colleagues! Mmmm...are my eyes going to get even redder later on? Hope not!

でも逆に遊ぶと、キランと真っ白な白目くんに戻ってくれるかも！！！カラオケに期待！

さむっ！！ / It's freezing cold

いきなり寒い〜！

夏よりは冬が好きな気がしたけど、指先に感覚がなくなると「やっぱ春とか秋がいいよな〜」と思う。でも、寒い日に紅茶とビスケットをお供に本を読んだりすると「ふっふっふ。これが冬の醍醐味なのよね」などと思ってしまう、身勝手な私。

とりあえず風邪とかインフルエンザにだけはかかりたくない！

絵本以外にやっているお仕事が子ども相手の体力勝負なので、一時も気がぬけない。

まあ、かかっちゃうときにはどうしようもないんだろうけど、どうか今年も健康に過ごせますよーに！

It's got freezing since last night! (apparently it's going to get mild again though)

I thought I preferred Winter to the Summer though I'm not sure now. The tips of my fingers got numb! But I have to say I love reading with a cuppa tea and some digestive biscuits!

ソファーから飛ぶ練習をする子どもたちの姿を想像しただけで、なんともほんわかしますね〜。ふふふ。

Just glanced at my publishers's web site, and I found this comment on my book from a reader. The reader has three boys, and they fantasise that they are the three duckling brothers! Apparently her kids practice flying off a couch! So sweet!

おてがみ / Letters from kids

先日東京の出版社にお邪魔した時に、こどもたちから届いたお手紙を見せてもらいました〜。

ずーーっと見たいと思っていたのですが、今は個人情報の管理がきびしく、届いても私は直接出版社へ出向かない限り読めないのです。自分に届いたお手紙なのに、読めないって複雑！！！

中には「お返事ください」とか書いてあったり、かわいい絵が描いてあって、とっても心が痛かったです。ファンレターくらいは転送してもいいように法律を改良してほしいよ〜！

When I went to one of my publishers in Tokyo, I finally saw fan letters from kids. I always wanted to see them, but the personal information is protected so strictly here I couldn't read them for about a year!!! I absolutely understand protecting privacy is essential, but those letters were written for me! and the kids are asking me to read them! Some kids wanted replies, and others drew me beautiful pictures! I wish the law allowed at least fan letters to be forwarded to who's addressed to!

カプチーノには顔がある

打ち合わせで行ったカフェで出てきたカプチーノ。
店員さんがわざわざ一回テーブルまで運んだのに顔が描かれていないことに気がづいて、わざわざカウンターに戻ってまで描いてくれた顔です。顔はうれしい。顔はかわいい。でも一日中歩いてくたくただったし、一回テーブルに運ばれそうになって「やった！カプチーノ飲めるぞ！」とウキウキした気持ちになったところで肩すかしを食わされた私は少し「顔なんてどうでもいいからカプチーノ飲ませてくれ」と心の中で思ってしまった。

戻りました〜 / I'm back!

帰ってきました。
たった３日だったのに、忙しすぎて何だか一週間くらいいた気分です。ほとんど約束の時間と場所を行き来するだけで、ブラブラできた時間といったら三軒茶屋での１時間だけ。こっちじゃあんまり食べれないベトナム料理を３日で２回食べてきた！でも食べたりないのだ〜！

担当さんたちもお元気そうで、会えてうれしかったです。やっぱり直に会って話すと違う。電話じゃ心が通わないのよね〜。ライブも行けたし、さあ、またドーンと行くぞー！I got back from Tokyo. It was only a three day trip though it seemed as though it was a week trip. Each day was packed with appointments, so I had only an hour to stroll around. It was great to see my editors after 5 months. It's so much nicer to talk on projects in person. I got lots of ideas now!

写真は、人が入る前の日比谷野外音楽堂。私が写したんじゃないけど。野外は気持ちいい。でも寒かった！

ちょっくら出かけてきます。

明日からライブと仕事で東京へ行ってきます。
久しぶりだな〜。５ヶ月ぶりです。岐阜から東京で一人暮らしをした時は、なんて都会でコワイところなんだろうと思った。ロンドンから東京にきたとき、なんて安全で平和な都市なんだろうと思った。人間って柔軟性があるから生きてけるんですよね〜とか思ってみたり。
大学時代の友達や、徳島で出会った友達に会えるのも楽しみデス。
I'm going to Tokyo for a few days from tomorrow. I haven't been there for 5 months now. It's absolutely fantastic to have bullet trains here. It takes me to Tokyo in one and a half hours, when it would take 6 to 8 hours by local trains. Technology technology! I'm so looking forward to seeing my uni friends!

い〜い湯だな〜 / At a local hot spring

今日は、タダ券もらって近くの温泉へ！
仕事が一段落した夕方から１時間くらい行ってきました。やっぱり近くに温泉があるっていいな〜。いつもはそれほど気持ちいいと感じたことはなかったんですが、今回は疲れがたまってたみたいで、サイコー！でした。はぁ〜気持ちよかった！

来週は、東京でお仕事なのでまた気合い入れてがんばります！I went to a local hot spring after work today. It's great to have a hot spring just a 10min ride away from home. I hadn't really felt that great after hot spring before, but it was fantastic today! I must have been a bit tired.

おふとんぬくぬく/ Sun-kissed futon

おふとんを太陽に干すとぬくぬくする。
I love airing my futon on a sunny day.
干したふとんにくるんとくるまると、冬眠したい気分になる。
The futon gets so warm and fluffy soft that it makes me want to hibernate.
今もふとん干し中。
I've put the futon out today as well.
今夜は、ふとんの中で本を読むのだ。
I can't wait to read wrapped in the futon tonight...
そして眠くなったらそのまま寝ちゃうのだー。
...and fall asleep.

ケーブルテレビ / Cable TV

昨日から、ケーブルテレビで私の特集が流れてます。大垣ケーブルテレビがつながる区域の方々、よかったら見てみてくださいね〜。（詳細は右端の「メディア情報参照」）A local cable TV's featuring my latest book and interview now. It's on Ogaki cable TV, and the programme will be broadcast 28 times in total in a week.

昨日は、ピザを描きました。見ただけでよだれが出そうなピザを目指して、本屋に行って料理本の研究をしたり、ネットで調べたり、担当さんにアドバイス頂いたりして描いてみました。完璧！とは言えないけど、結構おいしそうな熱々ピザが描けましたよ〜。あ〜チーズ食べたい！I drew pizza yesterday. This is for a book I've been working on for a Japanese publisher. I aimed to nail a very realistic, mouth-watering pizza!! I don't think I got it 100% right yet, but I'm quite satisfied. Woo...I want to eat four cheese pizza now!!!!

NHKの「青春リアル」っていう番組、結構興味深いです。今時らしく、チャットで全国各地に住む人たちが意見を出し合う。私は知らない人とチャットはしないですが、こうして励まし合ったり意見をぶつけたりすることも可能なんですね。

うなぎ / Grilled eel

ひさしぶりにうなぎを食べました。うなぎってウーパールーパーの仲間みたいな姿してますよね。実際どうなんだろう。それともヘビの親戚？とか何とか考え出すと食べられなくなるので、ここは無心で味を楽しむべきだなと思いました。I had grilled eel for lunch yesterday. I don't know if I love the appearance of eel to be honest, but I shouldn't think about it when I'm eating. It tastes good anyway.
うなぎ屋さんのお庭。大きいのやら小さいのやら、たぬきがいっぱいいた。The garden of the eel restaurant. There were various sizes of potteries of raccoon.
柿畑が色づいてきました。昔はそこら中柿畑だったんだけどな。最近めっきり減りました。これからどんどん果物がおいしくなるな〜！ウシシ。A persimmon orchard. There used to be so many persimmon orchards in my area, but they are decreasing rapidly. What a shame. Anyway the fruit was getting ripe, and they'll taste great!

プラン・ジャパン / Plan Japan

私の絵が世界中のこどもたちの手にわたるってだけでも大興奮なのに、さらにそのこどもたちがこのペーパークラフトで楽しく遊んでくれるのかと思うと！たまらんですねー。Not just I've been a supporter of Plan Japan, but they've been my illustration client. They are launching a new campaign this Autumn. The supporters of Japan send one of 4 paper toys to their children in the world, so the kids can play with them.I supplied illustration for two of four toys, the No1 and 3 in the picture above.

It's so exciting to think kids scattered all over the world will have my picture in their hands. I really hope they'll have fun with the toys

どーんとこい！ / The local festival

うちの近所では、毎年「どんとこい祭り」というかなりこぶしの効いた名前のお祭りがあります。屋台が出て、ラーメンやら手作りおこわやら野菜果物まで売ってたり、ステージでは子どもからお年寄りまでの芸が披露されます。そして演歌歌手とか来ちゃいます。去年はジェロとおばあちゃんたちのアイドル橋幸夫でした。年に１度の大きな楽しみなのか、ステージ前にはずらーーーーっとご年配の方が。帽子率高い！There's an annual local festival held in Oct. Lots of booths sell food like noodles, cooked rice, and sweets. Kids through elderly people perform on the stage. It's quite a fun event.
私はお昼ごはんに高山ラーメンとおこわとみかん、からあげなどを皆で分け合い、すぐに帰ってきました。結構暑かった！I spent the whole day in the festival last year, but I just popped in to get some lunch and got home this year. It was still pretty hot!

NHK グラン・ジュテ

NHKの「グラン・ジュテ」という番組好きです。
たま〜に偶然やっている時に観るだけなんだけど、観ると世の中色んな人がいるのね〜とドキドキします。
がんばる女性ばかりを追ったこの企画は、やっぱりがんばる女性が作ったのかしら？ There's a great TV programme called "Grand jute". This programme features women who pursue their dreams. Today it was about a young entrepreneur who produces bags in Bangladesh and sell them in Japan. Her bags are 100% produced as fair trade. It's inspiring to see those people pursuing their goals through high and low in their lives.

いろいろ

月曜日は、ひさびさに体調が悪く一日けだるくて寝たり起きたり本を読んだり。仕事しなきゃー！とがんばってみたものの、全然できないのであきらめました。これってきっとフリーランス病だと思うんですが、どうも何かやっていないと落ち着かない。普通に休み時間も作ればいいのですが、休んでいると焦ってしまうのは、やっぱりフリーランス病だと思う。ほかのフリーランス仲間も言ってたし。きっと休めない病なんだな！I don't know what it was, but I wasn't feeling that well on Mon, so spent the day sleeping and reading. Since I started free-lancing, I haven't been able to "rest" in daily life. There's no problem when I have a big chunk of holiday though, in the everyday life I feel I have be doing something! Some of my free-lancing friends were also saying the same thing. I guess this is "Work hard free-lancers!!" syndrome!

昨日は、体調ふっかーつ！午後から「ぎふ咲楽」の記者さんが来て取材。私のブリキのおもちゃや缶のコレクションや、古本コレクションも写真に撮っていかれた。はたして載るのかは分かりませんが、ちゃんと部屋に展示しといてよかった〜。どんな記事になるんでしょうか？楽しみです。A local magazine writer interviewed me yesterday. I always love when people get interested in my precious tin collection! She took some photos of them. I've no idea what she's going to write about or which photo's going to be in the magazine though. I look forward to the article.

台風近づいてきてますね。どうなるんでしょーね！？A huge typhoon's approaching. I hope it's not going to do much damage!

ピザ・ぴざ・ピッツア/ Pizza

今日のランチにピザを手作りするとして、みなさんなら何をのっけますか？私の好みは、フレッシュトマトソースにモッツァレラチーズをのっけて焼いて、最後にバジルを散らすだけの、シンプル・イズ・ザ・ベスト！なマルゲリータです！Let's imagine you are making a hand made pizza for lunch today. What toppings would you put? I absolutely love simple margarita with fresh tomato and basil.

でも、子どもの頃の好みは全然ちがってませんでした？具だくさんで、ウインナーとか卵とかサラミとか何かよく分からんがとにかくぐっちゃぐちゃに、もっりもりにのっかっている巨大ピザにあこがれたもんです。今、広告で入ってくる宅配ピザのピザのベースが見えないくらいのピザは、見てるだけでげっそりなんですが、昔はああいうのみると、どんな具がのってるのかいちいち細かくチェックしてました。どの具の上にどの具がのっかてるかとか、そんなとこまで。

なんでこんな話をしているかというと、今ピザのお話を描いていて、私は当然「ピザっていったらマルゲリータでしょ。うひょうひょ」とかよだれをすすりながら絵を描いていたんですが、それを見せたら担当さんに「そうですよね、私もマルゲリータ大好物です！でも、子どもの時の好みって違いませんでした？」的なことを言われ、ハッ！！！！！！なるほどーーーー！！！となったわけです。I'm writing a story about pizza now, and naturally I thought margarita was the best for the book. I showed it to my editor. She liked it, but also reminded me that I used to like a pizza with lots of toppings on! That's true. I used to love having an egg, sausages, ham and no veges!

なので今、カラフルで具だくさんのピザを描いています。描いていると食べたくなります！作ってもらって食べるならマルゲリータだけど、自分で作るなら盛りだくさんにしよう。あ、でもオーブンないわ。So I changed the pizza to more colourful one. As I draw, my tommy growls! Mmm...I haven't have a pizza for ages. I should deserve one right now!

郵便局のストライキ / Postal Strike

「とべとべあひるの３きょうだい」が出て、イギリスの友人やエージェントにもプレゼントで送りました。それが８月末。一週間たっても届かない。２週間たっても届かない。あれ〜？おかしいな〜と思っていたところ、イギリスでは大々的に郵便局がストライキをやっていた・・・。結局３週間くらいかかったにしろ、本はみんなの手元に届いたのでよかったのですが、届かなかったらすっごい損するところだった！国際便だったのが、運が良かったのかなと思います。たぶん国内便は、ボロボロだったろうなー。I sent my new book to my friends and agent in the UK at the end of August. It usually takes just over a week though, this time it didn't arrive till 3 weeks later. I didn't know about the postal strike. I would have lost quite a few books and their postage!

住んでた時は、やれストライキだ何だというのは日常茶飯事だったので、慣れたものだったのですが、すっかり日本の暮らしに慣れてしまって忘れてしまったというわけです。だって宅配便は、次の日に届くし、時間指定もできてしまう。受け取り損ねても電話一つで次の日配送。すっごい世界ですよ！ロンドンじゃ、受け取り損ねたら何時間ならしても出ない電話に電話して、バスを乗り継いで３０分はかかる地域に一つの大型郵便局へ行き、おっもい荷物をまたバスで運んでくるという。。。今また同じことができるかというとギモンー！While I was in London, I was used to strikes. But since I got back in Japan, things move so smoothly here that I forgot about any strike could happen in the UK. What's amazing about Japanese shipment is that a package gets to its destination the very next day (in one piece!) and you can set the time of the delivery too. I love this "Takuhai" system.

最近、宮部みゆきさんの本を紹介して頂いて、秋の夜長、読書の秋ってことで読んでます。「かまいたち」と「震える岩」を読みました。江戸時代の捕物帳です。今まで私は明治の作家とか、民俗学者のノンフィクションものしか読まなかったので、かなり新鮮でした。おもしろかったです！It's got much cooler in the moening and the night. It's perfect for reading. I read two of Miyuki Miyabe's mystery novels. They were fun!

ケーブルテレビ / Cable TV

今朝ケーブルテレビの方に、インタビューをして頂きました。１０歳の時に作った絵本について話したり、今の作品や思いについて話したり。考えているつもりでも、ふだん自分のことや仕事について話す機会はないので、話しているうちに「あ〜この時代はこういうこと考えてたんだな〜、自分」とか「なるほど、そんな考えもあったか〜、そうか〜」など、自分が話しているのに、逆に聞き手になったみたいな、変な感じでした。でも自分について再発見できたような感じで、おもしろかったです。放送は、今月１３日〜１８日の間に、大垣ケーブルテレビ「ニュースのひろば」で繰り返し放送して頂けるようです。よろしかったらチェックしてみてくださいね！I got an interview by a local cable TV today about my work and thoughts. As a free lance illustrator, I hadn't had many opportunities so far to think and talk about my work in front of a camera. It was fascinating to think back the past and rebuild my own story!

インスピレーション♪ / the sourse of Inspiration

仕事場の雰囲気って大切。今は和室なので、なんだか壁の質感とおもちゃコレクションに微妙なギャップがあるのですが、これはこれで、ヨーロッパ・イン・ジャパンな感じでいいかも？It's quite important to have a good work space. Since I moved back in my parents' house, I've lived in this Japanese style room. It's a bit odd to see all those European goods in this room, but I guess this is a kind of West meets East? 自分でつくったおもちゃも展示。These are what I made in uni.

サイト情報 / My images on a blog

イギリスの出版社のデザイナーさんが、趣味で（？）やってるサイトに私のスケッチを載っけてもらいました〜。他のイラストレーターさんのラフスケッチはかなりおもしろいです。なかなか同業者のスケッチブックの中って見る機会ないので、参考になりますね。向こうの出版社のパーティーで会ったことがある人もいます。その人たちのその後の活動が見られるのもうれしい。毎週月曜日更新のはずです。私はエントリー#19デス。ココをクリック！ A great blog run by a designer at Random House now has some of my images. It's fascinating to see other illustrator's sketches. Illustrators are usually individual, so we don't get to see each other's sketchbooks. ドラえもんの道具 / Tools of the future

Doraemon!

気づけばもう９月も終わりじゃないですか。
早いのう。数日前まで、「夏の復讐」みたいな残暑で、ヒィヒィ言ってたのに、今日はすっかり涼しくて。季節ってパッと変わるんですね。１０月もやること詰まってるので、速く、しかも満足のいくように、しかしそれ以上にすばやく！イギリスの本を仕上げたいものです。あ〜ドラえもんのすてきな道具で、時間を止まらせるか、机のひきだしにタイムマシンがほしい、など現実逃避論を言い出したら赤信号だな。

今日初めて宮部みゆきさんの小説を買ってみました。ミステリーはあんまり読まないので、冒険です。今夜ふとんの中で読むのが楽しみダ。It's already the end of Sep! Isn't it a bit too quick? Just about a few days ago, we were hit by summery heat here though it's cool and wet today. I guess today's the borderline of the two seasons. I have much to do in Oct as well. I have to finish a book for a UK publisher asap. Not just quickly, but it has to be a fine job! There's comic called "Doraemon" in Japan. It's about a robot who has many futuristic tools to help a lazy kid called "Nobita". I wish I had one of Doraemon's tools to stop the time, or a time machine!Now I should stop talking nonsense and start to face to the task of the day! :-)

えほん劇場へいらっしゃい / Welcome to my Book Theatre

えほん劇場はりきってやってきました！
小さい子が多かったのですが、みんな最後まで静かにお話に聞き入ってくれて、とってもうれしかった！おこしくださった方、ありがとうございました。たのしかったです。I had a book reading today at a library. I named my book reading event "Kanako Usui's Book Theatre", as I act out the story rather than just reading it. Most of the kids were toddlers though they listened to me really well! Very impressed!

大垣ケーブルテレビの方も来てくださいました。チラッとしか映らないだろうと思っていたのですが、今度自宅でインタビューまでして頂けることになり、びっくり玉手箱です！わ〜、ありがたい。自分の作品について話を聞いてもらえるって、しあわせです。Also a local TV staff came to film the event. I didn't expect it to be broadcast for long, but they are actually going to come to my studio to interview me. I'm such a lucky person to have an opportunity to talk about my own work! Really grateful.

うすいかなこのえほん劇場

２７日、日曜日に大垣市アクアウォーク内にある図書館で、「うすいかなこのえほん劇場」なるものを開きまっす！（２時から）小学６年生までのお子さん＋保護者さんペア対象です。お近くにお住まいの方は、ぜひ遊びにきてくださいね〜。大垣のケーブルテレビも来てくれるようです。テレビに映るのは一瞬だと思いますけどね！ヨロシクお願いします。I'm giving another book reading at a library in my local shopping centre. Apparently local cable TV's going to film the event. I'm sure the broadcast will be just for seconds though!

井上雄彦さん特集だったNHKのテレビ番組「プロフェッショナル」の再放送みました！旅行先で！あの人の仕事への姿勢に、尋常でない気迫と覚悟を感じました。すごく揺さぶられた。究極に眠かったけど、がんばって観てよかった！I watched a repeat of a TV programme, "The Professionals" which I'd missed a week before. It was about Takehiko Inoue, a comic artist who's famous for "Slum dunk". I was stunned by his amazing attitude to his work. I'm glad I watched it though it was on quite late at night!

ずーーーーーーーーーーーーっとだらだら続けているイギリスとの絵本の仕事。いかん、このままでは納得のいく本にならない。納得できない仕事をすると後でものすごいがっくりきそう。それだけはイヤー！ここが踏ん張りどころなのダ。本文の最終原稿はほとんどできているのですが、肝心要の表紙と、タイトルページのラフがまだできとらん。そして、アイデアを出してはボツ・ボツ・ボツの連続記録更新中。うーーーーーーーーーーーーーん、まさにこの絵の女の子のポーズがしばらく続きそうです。でもがんばろう！The book I've been working on might still take some time before finished. I've done most of the artworks, but I haven't done the roughs of some key pages yet. I have to be content with my work, otherwise I'd regret afterwards! I don't like when I don't like my own work, so I must get these roughs done quickly, but satisfyingly.I think I've been posing just like this girl in the picture for about a day and a half so far, and will probably continue today as well!

歩く父。歩く娘を母が激写。この日の清水さんは、いつも以上に人が多かった。清水さん大人気。The back of my dad and myself, photographed by mum. Kiyomizu dera temple is always busy, but it was even busier this day.
龍安寺はマイナスイオンにあふれている。しばしボーッとなる。しかし枯山水エリアは工事中なり。庭の３分の一は見えなかったし、足場でとてもじゃないけど風流とはかけ離れた姿だった。これでも５００円とりますか。枯山水なら東福寺へ！Ryoanji temple is surrounded by so much green! Love all those moss under the gentle sunlight. But the rock garden was under renovation, and scaffolding was destroying the beauty of it!They still charged the full fee to entre. Mmm! annoying! I recommend Tofukuji temple for the rock garden.

大阪アンド京都 / Osaka & Kyoto

大阪で音楽イベントに行き一泊、その後京都で２泊してきました。
イベントは、３バンドによる対バンイベント。３時間の野外ライブでした。最初の方がめちゃくちゃ暑かったので、終わったらクタクタ。そしてさらに夕飯を求めて大阪の夜をブラブラ２時間。よく寝れました（笑）Between Sunday and Wednesday, it was national holiday in Japan. I went to Osaka for a rock event, and stayed in Kyoto for two nights with my parents. The event lasted for 3 hours. I was so tired after jumping round! It was great fun though.

その後京都へ。
京都は、海外の友達のガイドとかで、一年だけで５回くらい？行っていて、毎回２泊〜４泊しているので、かなり身近な感じ。でもまだまだ発掘したいところがたくさんあるのよね、この街。Then the next day, went to Kyoto. I've been to Kyoto for about 5 times so far within a year, because of my oversea friends. I'm getting to know some parts of this historic city, but there is still so much to discover!
京都芸術センター。廃校になった私立の洋館建ての小学校を改装。すてきなカフェや、アート系図書館など。くつろぎのスペースです。教室の一室では、劇団が練習してました。そしてシルバーウィークだったので、無料ライブも。昨日はボサノヴァ、おとといはジャズでした。オススメ。This is Kyoto Art Centre. The building used to be a primary school. There is a lovely cafe in here. We were lucky to get there when a free music session was held. I recommend this place for someone seeking difference.

大阪での一番の思い出はこのサイズ差！デカッ！ちっちゃ！Saw these doggies in Osaka. A good example of BIG and SMALL.

シルバーウィーク/ The week called "silver"

明日はわたくしの生まれた日。
何をするかと言うと〜、大阪までライブに行ってきます！た〜のしみだなー。大阪城の野音だそうで。大阪城も初めてなので、ブラブラしてこよう。Tomorrow's my birthday! What am I going to do? I'm going to my favourite band's gig in Osaka. I can't wait!

そして、月曜日に両親と京都で合流。母上が「４０数年清水寺に行ったことがない」などと切ないことを言うので、「わたくしにガイドをお任せください」ということになったわけです。京都はココ一年あまりで、５月には４泊したし、その前も数泊したし、日帰りでも何回か行っているので、なんか「我が庭」っぽいです。
Then I'll be off to Kyoto to meet up with my parents. My mum hasn't been to Kiyomizu temple for over 40 years. That's a bit too sad, so we decided to go there. I went to Kyoto at least 4 times in a year. I've got to know quite a bit, I think. But what's great about Kyoto is that there's always something new every time I visit there. I wonder what my new discovery will be this time!

数日ブログは更新できないかもしれませんが、思い出話は持って帰ってきます。では！I don't think i can update this blog till Thur though, I'll bring back photos and stuff!

プレゼント / Birthday present

いくつになってもうれしい誕生日プレゼント！
この前ポストを開けるとイギリスからの郵便物。私がロンドンの父母のように慕っている、しかも私の４コマ「ロンドン劇場」に多数ご出演のマイクさんとキャサリンさんから。あ〜り〜が〜と〜（涙・会いたい）I guess everybody likes getting Birthday presents! I got these books from Mike & Kathryn who were like my guardians in London. I'm so happy to get an English copy of "Where The Wild Things are".

下の「かいじゅうたちのいるところ」は、モーリス・センダック。うれしい！上はイギリスを代表するクエンティン・ブレイクが絵を担当したもの。クエンティン・ブレイクは一度、私の大学で講義をしてくれました。若気の至りからコワイモノ知らずだった私は、確かクエンティンにちょっと反論してムッとさせてしまった覚えが（笑）悪気はなかったんだけどー。ごめんね。Quentin Blake gave a speech at my uni once. I remember I asked him something about his style, and I think he didn't like my opinion. I didn't mean to be rude though. The question was a bit too direct maybe?

でも彼が挿絵を担当したロアルド・ダールの本は、私が初めて英語で読んだ本なので思い出深いです。日本語訳は読んだことないので分かりませんが、宮崎駿さんもファンみたい。シニカルでおもしろいので、大人も楽しめますよ。I absolutely love Quentin Blake's work in Roald Dahl's books. Those books were first English books I ever read. I can't think of Dahl's stories without Blake's illustration!

ブックトラスト新人賞 / Book Trust

2005年だったか2006年だったか忘れましたが、イギリスで出版した「The Fantastic Mr.Wani」（邦題・はしれワニくん）がブックトラストの新人賞をとったことがあります。Once upon a time, a long long time ago, I forgot if it was 2005 or 2006, anyway I won The Book Trust's emerging illustrator award.

たぶんその関係だと思うのですが、今日今月２３日に行われる2009年ブックトラスト絵本賞の授賞式の招待状がきました。ぜひ行きたい。行きたいな〜。でも場所は地球の反対側だ。どこでもドア欲しい。今回の新人賞候補は、一番下にある６冊。どれもおもしろそうな感じ。またイギリス行くことあったらチェックしてみよう。Today I got an invitation to this year's ceremony which would be held on 23rd of this month. I love to go. I really do. All the books listed look very nice. But the problem is that I'm about 6000km away from the land!! Mmm...The 6 titles of the emerging illustrators look especially nice. I'll check them out when I have a chance to travel there again!

ぜんぜん関係ないけど、この前NHKの「プロフェッショナル」が井上雄彦さん特集だった・・・最後の２０分しか観てない。来週の火曜０：４５〜（月曜の夜と覚えるべし）から再放送だそうです。観ます！

NHKの「The Songwriters」は、すんばらしい。

だんだんボブ・ディランのようになってきた佐野元春さんが、毎回アーティストを迎えて、音楽と詩について現役大学生と立教大学で考える。大学生の目の前で即興で音楽を作ったり詩を書くことに挑戦する佐野さんやゲスト。プロとはいえ、まだ練り込まれていない段階の音や言葉を聴く機会なんて、スーパー貴重！前回の矢野顕子さんは、すごかった。大学生が書いた詩をみて、すぐにキーボードで音楽を紡いでしまう。彼女の「こんな感じ」というイメージは音楽なんですね。ラフの段階でこのクオリティーって本当にどういうこと！？

さだまさしの回、観たかったな。さだ君は確かによくしゃべるおじさんだけど、彼の書いた詩は良すぎ。ロンドン時代、「案山子（かかし）」には何度も 泣かされたし、うちの母は「秋桜（コスモス）」を聴くと自分が嫁に出て行った時の思い出と、私が嫁に出て行く「妄想」が重なって泣けるそうです。

来週再来週で終わり。最後のゲストはDragon AshのKJだそうな。ヒゲのクリーン度が気になって仕方がない人物だ。どんな剃り方をしたらああなるのか。でもこの番組では、ヒゲのことは語ってくれないだろうな。Dragon Ashはあんまり知らないけど、KJもエレファントカシマシ好きな感じなので観れたら観よう。宮本さんにこの番組に出てみてほしいけど、30分じゃとても足りないし、まず番組が成立しないだろうな〜！(笑)There's a fab TV programme called "The songwriters" on NHK Japan. Motoharu Sano, a Bob Dylan looking artist with a hint of Japanese, invites an artist to his old uni, and talks about the lyrics and music. If you get a chance, do check out on youtube.

マカフシギ！巡り会い / Another amazing reunion

そうなんです、巡り会い。こんな言葉があるから人生やめられんのです。８月３０日にも書いてますが、なんかまたすごいことがありました。I just love when I happen to have an unexpected reunion! I wrote about three top "reunions" of my life back on 30th Aug.though, a similar thing happened again!

昨日の「おおきな木」さんでえほん劇場が終わった後、サイン会をしている時に近づいてきた１人のご夫人。満面の笑みで近づいて見えたので、うれしくなって笑い返していたら「お久しぶりです」と一言。え？？なになに？知り合い？どっかで見たことある気がするけど、さっぱり分からない！少しヒントを出してもらって・・・もしかして、もしかして！小学１、２年の時の担任の水野先生？！となったわけです。It was yesterday After I finished reading my books and when I was book signing. A middle-aged, but refined lady approached me smiling. I smiled back and she said "It's been a long time." mmm!!!??? Have I met you? I sort of recognise your face, but do give me some clues! I put the clues together and figured out she was my ex primary school teacher! I hadn't met her for over 23 years! She came to the book reading after finding my article on the newspaper.

水野先生とは、ずーーーっと年賀状のやり取りを２０年くらいしていて、でも数年前に送った年賀状が届かずに返送されてしまってからは、全く連絡がとれなかったのです。しかしお会いするのは、８歳以来だから、ざっと２３年ぶり！この前の岐阜新聞の私の記事を見て、飛んできてくださったのです。おお〜すごい〜。何かすごいぞ〜。私はホンットーにおてんばで、活発で落ち着きがなかった子だったと思うのですが、水野先生は優しかったな〜。先生が大好きだったから、甘えてしまってさらに落ち着きがなくなる・・・という悪循環だったような。ははは。今自分も子どもと接する機会が多いので、元気な子を見ていると「まるで自分を見ているようだ」と思ってしまいます。やっぱりもの事は循環してるんですかね、おもしろいもんです。

昨日は、初めてお会いする方はもちろん、父の同僚の方も来てくださったりと、なんだかとってもうれしい一日だったのでした。
I was in touch with her up to a few years ago, but since she moved, I couldn't get in touch with her. It was amazing to reunite with her after such a long time. I'm so happy that we can write each other again. I met new people and people from my past, and also I met one of my dad's colleagues yesterday. It was truly a special day of my life!

えほん劇場 / Book reading

岐阜市伊奈波通（いなばどおり）にある絵本と童話のお店「おおきな木」さんで、えほん劇場を開かせて頂きました。えほん劇場っていうと大げさですが、要は おはなし会デス。絵本専門店さんでやらせて頂くのは初めて！わくわくしながら行きました〜。I had a book reading today at a children's book specialist, "Ookinaki" in Gifu city. I was so excited, cos it was my first ever event at a bookshop.

やっぱり自分で何ヶ月 もかかって作るお話なので、読み語るとついつい感情移入してしまいます。特に「とべとべあひるの３きょうだい」は、３兄弟の飛びたい気持ちにシンクロして しまって、泣きそうになってしまふ。でも３冊の中で一番イベント映えするのは「はしれワニくん」のようです。絵がデカイので、インパクトがあるんでしょう か、イベント後にワニくんを購入される方が多いんですよね！「とべとべ〜」は、ゆっくり眺めるうちに前に見えなかったキャラが見えてきたりする「じっくり コトコト煮込む派」なので、もしよかったらお子さんをちょこんとおひざに乗っけて読み語ってやってくださいね〜。I think it's natural cos I spend a long time on writing the stories though, I tend to empathise with my own stories. Especially when I read my latest book about three duckling brothers longing to fly, I get quite emotional!! "The Fantastic Mr.Wani" is proved to be popular at those events. Is it because the pictures are more dynamic than other books of mine?Anyway, "Ookinaki" is a fantastic place to spend an afternoon with your kids choosing a book of the day. If you get a chance to come near, please do give a visit.

とべとべあひるの３きょうだい / The latest book's out now

「もうすぐ　もうすぐ」と言っている間に、発売日が過ぎてました！（笑）発売前がいちばんわくわくしていて、わくわくしすぎてコロッと忘れた、みたいな感じです。よくあることですよね。（私だけ？）とにかく！！がんばって作ったので、ぜひ本屋さんでチェックしてやってください。詳しい内容は、MENUにある「えほん」のページで。新刊発売に伴って、数カ所でフリーペーパー「うほうほつうしん」も置かせて頂いたのですが、部数が少なかったので、あまり見てもらえなかったかも！？せっかく作ったので下にのっけてみました。クリックすると大きくなります。

ゴヤの版画展 / Printmaking by Goya

個人的にものすごく楽しみにしている企画展。
ゴヤは美術科生だった高校の時、卒展で模写したくらい好きでした。あのくっら〜い「黒い絵」の連作のパワーとその反骨精神にドカーンとやられたわけです。そして黒い絵と同じくらい好きだったのが、戦争を題材にして描かれた銅版画のシリーズ。数年前にイギリスのアーティスト、チャップマン兄弟が買い取り、上から落書きして台無しにしたあのシリーズです。む〜ん、これに関しては思い出すだけでちょっとフツフツとしたもんがこみ上げてくるので置いとくとしましょう。I'm really looking forward to this exhibition, starting in a few days.I used to love Goya's black paintings when I was in high school. I was in the art department, so I even copied one of Goya's paintings for an exhibition once. I like the series of copper prints, The disaster of war as well. I still remember The Chapman brothers bought out all the prints and scribbled over them! Mmm...I get a bit upset by thinking about it

マドリッドのプラド美術館にも行ったし、今までに何度かゴヤのオリジナルとは対面しているんですが、まっさかこんな近くにきてくれるとは！９月１１日から１１月１日までだそうですよ〜。今月は無理かもしれないけど、来月絶対行くぞぅ！Anyway, while I was in Europe, I visited Prado museum and others to see original work of Goya. But I never expected his work to come so near! This exhibition lasts till 1st Nov. I'm a bit too busy this month, but I'd love to go there next month!

お初・鵜飼 / Cormorant fishing

岐阜に生まれ育った割に一度も長良川の鵜飼に行ったことがなかったので、「これはいかん！」と思い、昨日行って参りました！５時４５分から鵜匠さんによる説明があり、６時１５分に出発。１５分くらいかけて、上流の方までゆらりんゆらりんゆられていくのは、「癒し」の一言につきる！６時半頃から７時半頃までは、止まった船の中でお弁当を食べます。観光所で「鵜飼弁当」かなんかあるだろうと思ったのですが、そんなステキなものは全くなく、しかたないのでファミマ弁当でした。ここはちょっと残念！でもお弁当用意してもそんなに売れるわけじゃないのかな〜。（しかし日曜だったからか、何十隻とあった船は満員でした）I always wanted to go to Ukai, comorant fishin, a traditional fishing method, but I hadn't had a chance till last night. Apparently there are 12 places practice Ukai fishing in Japan, but This one in Gifu is the only one that the skill of fishing is passed on only to their families. My friend and I got there around 6 and the boat left around 6:15. We had about 15 min ride before stopping at the shore. We had about an hour till Ukai started, so we had a bento box. Probably because it was Sun, all the boats were full of people! (There were at least 3 dozens of boats. )

そして始まった鵜飼。
かがり火の中で川に入ったりでたり、ときどき魚を加えていたりする鵜は、それはそれは一生懸命働いていました。人間との信頼関係がしっかり築けていないとなりたたないのが鵜飼だそうです。どの鵜たちもご主人のためにがんばってましたよ〜。私はかがり火は魚を寄せ付けるためにたくのかな、と思っていたんですが、実は真逆だったんですね。光をみると物陰で休んでいた魚がびっくりして逃げ回る→かがり火で魚の鱗が光る→鵜がそれをつかまえる、というのが鵜飼だそうです。奥が深い！
At 7:30 Ukai began.
In the torch light and under its reflection, cormorants were working very very hard. Apparently fishermen must build solid relationship with cormorants in order to make them work. Cormorants need to be trained at least for 3 years, and to become totally faithful to the fishermen, it can take as long as 10 or 15 years. I always thought that the torch light was to attract fish, but in fact that was to scare fish. When fish moves swiftly under the torch light , its scale shines so cormorants can catch them.


その後、鵜飼船６艘が並んで川を渡りました。水面に映るこのなが〜い光がなんとも幻想的で・・・しばし現実を忘れるには十分でした。ぽーーーーーっと見とれてしまいましたよ〜。
After the performance, we were again at the shore, and saw 6 fishing boats lining up. The long reflection of the light was just so fantastic. It was enough to sweep away all the bits of things happening in real life.


仕事を終えて、船の上にひっぱりあげられて、鵜匠さんにえさをもらう鵜たち。おつかれさまでした〜。
Now, cormorants get fed and can rest. Good job!
